Maroons Score in Final Minute of Regulation; Tie Aurora 2-2
CHICAGO -- Senior defender Drew Marshall (Rockford, Ill./ Boylan) scored the game-tying goal with 20 seconds left in regulation as the University of Chicago men's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw with Aurora University Sunday at Stagg Field.
Marshall gathered the ball just inside the box following a Chicago corner kick and fired a shot past Aurora netminder Kevin Soderstrom to send the game into overtime. The goal was the first of Marshall's career.
All of the game's scoring occurred during a second half that featured 21 shots, 13 by the Maroons (4-1-2) and eight from Aurora.
The Spartans (4-2-1) got on the board first when Justin Pederson set up Nick Helmer, who dribbled across the goal mouth before scoring his fifth goal of the year at the 61:23 mark.
Sophomore midfielder Stanton Coville (Powell, Ohio/ Olentangy Liberty) answered for Chicago in the 71st minute with a 20-yard shot that found the back of the net for his third goal of the year.
Aurora took a 2-1 lead in the 84th minute when Christian Foote scored from eight yards away.
Chicago, which extended its unbeaten streak to five games (3-0-2), outshot the Spartans 24-12, including a 5-3 margin in the two overtime stanzas.
Soderstrom collected six saves for Aurora, while sophomore goalkeeper Chris Giusto (Davie, Fla./ Heritage) stopped two shots for Chicago.
Chicago's next match is set for Saturday, Sept. 26 at Illinois Wesleyan University at 7:30 p.m.
