PITTSBURGH -- Carnegie Mellon University scored three times in the game's first 11 minutes as the 10th-ranked Tartans defeated the University of Chicago 3-0 in University Athletic Association men's soccer action Saturday at Gesling Stadium.
The loss ended Chicago's seven-game unbeaten streak and dropped the Maroons' record to 6-2-2 overall, 0-1 in UAA play.
Carnegie Mellon opened the scoring when Keith Haselhoff intercepted a Chicago pass near midfield then fed teammate Jon Simon, who one-touched the ball into the back of the Maroons' net 2:33 into the contest. Carnegie Mellon (10-1, 1-0) went up 2-0 as the result of an own goal at the 5:13 mark.
In the 11th minute, Ricky Griffin stole the ball along the right sideline and slipped a pass to Pat Lutz, who tallied what proved to be the final goal of the contest.
