Chicago Defeats Elmhurst; Extends Unbeaten Streak to Seven

CHICAGO -- Junior forward Alex Clifford (Andover, Mass./ Phillips Academy) scored one goal and assisted on another to help lift the University of Chicago men's soccer team to a 3-1 win over Elmhurst College Wednesday at Stagg Field.

The victory extended the Maroons' unbeaten streak to seven matches (5-0-2) and raised their overall record to 6-1-2.

Sophomore midfielder Stanton Coville (Powell, Ohio/ Olentangy Liberty) opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with his fourth goal in as many games and fifth of the year. Senior forward Edgar Friloux (Madison, Wis./ West) sent a cross to Coville who fired a 10-yard shot past Bluejay netminder Sebastian Domczewski.

Elmhurst (6-3-1) evened the score when Randy Warren converted a penalty kick in the 28th minute.

Freshman midfielder Garrett Laird (Murrysville, Pa./ Franklin Regional) scored what proved to be the winning goal in the 39th minute when he tipped in a pass from Clifford for his first career goal.

Chicago capped the scoring two minutes into the second half when freshman forward Yoni Einhorn (Winter Park, Fla./ Winter Park) set up Clifford's third goal of the campaign -- a 15-yard shot from the right side.

Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Giusto (Davie, Fla./ Heritage) collected three saves for Chicago, while Domczewski stopped seven shots including a penalty kick attempt.

Chicago opens University Athletic Association play Saturday, Oct. 3 when it travels to Pittsburgh to face 10th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University.
