Maroons Win Share of UAA Title, Earn NCAA Berth

CHICAGO -- Sophomore Stanton Coville (Powell, Ohio/ Olentangy Liberty) converted a penalty kick in the final minute of the first overtime period to lift the University of Chicago to a 1-0 win over Washington (Mo.) University in University Athletic Association men's soccer play Saturday at Stagg Field. With the victory, Chicago gained a share of the UAA championship and by virtue of the league's tie-breaking procedures earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship.

The Maroons share the UAA title with Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Rochester. The Tartans and Yellowjackets tied their respective matches today, giving the three co-champions a 5-1-1 mark in UAA play. Chicago prevailed in the third step of the tie-breaking procedure: record against teams in succeeding order of finish.

Coville scored his ninth goal of the season after being taken down in the box with just 53 seconds remaining in the first overtime period.

Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Giusto (Davie, Fla./ Heritage), who made a pair of saves, tied a school record with his 11th shutout of the season. His 11 shutouts also tops the UAA.

Chicago outshot the Bears (9-7-3, 3-4) by an 11-9 margin on the day. Washington netminder John Smelczer stopped two shots.

Chicago has earned its second postseason appearance in four years under Head Coach Scott Wiercinski and its fifth overall. The UAA title is the second in the program's history and first since 2001.

The NCAA will announce the tournament bracket Monday morning.
