Maroons Fall to Whitewater in Closing Seconds

CHICAGO -- Luke Buchholz scored with 15 seconds left in the game to propel the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater to a 2-1 win over the University of Chicago men's soccer team Sunday at Stagg Field.

The game appeared headed for overtime when Wisconsin-Whitewater's Dan Montanye sent a ball toward the Chicago goal that Buchholz headed into the far left side of the net. Buchholz's goal, his 11th of the year, gave the Warhawks (9-5-3) the win and ended the Maroons' (10-3-2) four-game winning streak.

Wisconsin-Whitewater scored the only goal of the first half in the 29th minute when Zach Rewasiewicz's pass set up Luke Mangognia for his third goal of the year.

Chicago trailed for the next 56 minutes until sophomore midfielder Stanton Coville (Powell, Ohio/ Olentangy Liberty) buried a shot from the far right side of the box following a pass from midfield off the foot of sophomore defender Rashad Masri (Louisville, Ky./ Collegiate). Coville's goal at the 85:34 mark was his team-leading eighth of the year.

Both teams had solid scoring chances during the second half. Chicago senior forward Edgar Friloux (Madison, Wis./ West) sent a 10-yard blast just wide of the net in the 55th minute. Coville had a near miss on a short header in the 66th minute and two minutes later was stymied by Whitewater goalkeeper Andrew Krueger from five yards away.

Chicago sophomore netminder Chris Giusto (Davie, Fla./ Heritage) came up with a key save with just over six minutes left when he stopped a hard shot from four yards away from Whitewater's Ryan Boyd.

Krueger collected six saves on the day, while Giusto stopped three shots.

Chicago held a 12-8 edge in shots, including a 6-3 edge in the second half. The Maroons lost for the first time in eight home matches this season.

The Maroons, who closed out non-conference play, return to University Athletic Association action Friday, Oct. 30, when they travel to New York University.
