Liz Lawton, Samantha Brown Earn UAA Weekly Accolades
CHICAGO -- University of Chicago junior Liz Lawton (North Easton, Mass./ Thayer Academy) and freshman Samantha Brown (Louisville, Ky./ Mercy Academy) have been selected as the University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week for women's cross country and volleyball, respectively, the conference announced today.
Lawton finished third among 54 runners at the Sept. 4 Valparaiso University Crusader Open. She clocked a time of 18:44 on the five-kilometer course as the Maroons placed third among five teams – four of which represented Division I.
Lawton garnered her first UAA weekly award of the year and the second of her career.
Brown averaged 5.74 digs per set as the Maroons won three of five matches during the first week of the 2009 campaign. She turned in back-to-back 30-dig efforts at the Sept. 4-5 Elmhurst College Invitational, with 37 in a five-set win over John Carroll University and 34 in a five-set loss to the host Bluejays. Her 37 digs against John Carroll fell just one shy of the school record.
Brown received the first UAA Athlete of the Week award of her career.
