Maroons Sweep Benedictine

CHICAGO -- Freshman middle blocker Katie Trela (Glencoe, Ill./ Regina Dominican) collected five blocks and hit at a .444 clip as the University of Chicago volleyball team defeated Benedictine University 25-21, 26-24, 25-12 Thursday night at the Ratner Athletics Center.

The Maroons (12-7) won for the sixth time in their last eight outings and improved to 2-0 at home.

Trela finished the night with nine kills in 18 attempts with just one error. Her five total blocks included three solos.

Sophomore outside hitters Isis Smalls (Humble, Texas/ Atascocita) and Colleen Belak (Louisville, Ky./ Presentation Academy) combined for exactly half of the Maroons' kills (21 of 42). Smalls collected 11 kills, while Belak hit 10.

Sophomore setter Lauren Tarpey (Greensboro, N.C./ Grimsley) was credited with 33 assists, while freshman libero Samantha Brown (Louisville, Ky./ Mercy Academy) turned in 20 digs.

Chicago returns to action at the University Athletic Association Round Robin Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 3-4 at the University of Rochester. The Maroons open the event against third-ranked Emory University Saturday at 12:30 p.m. (Eastern).
