Maroons Split on Day Two of Elmhurst Invite

ELMHURST, Ill. -- The University of Chicago volleyball team split a pair of five-set matches Saturday on the second day of the Elmhurst College Invitational.

Chicago opened the day with a 25-21, 16-25, 23-25, 25-14, 15-12 win over John Carroll University (1-2). Sophomore outside hitters Colleen Belak (Louisville, Ky./ Presentation) and Isis Smalls (Humble, Texas/ Atascocita) hit 15 and 14 kills, respectively, while freshman libero Samantha Brown (Louisville, Ky./ Mercy Academy) collected 37 digs -- one shy of the school match record.

Sophomore setter Lauren Tarpey (Greensboro, N.C./ Grimsley) registered 46 assists to go along with 10 digs and a .455 hitting percentage (6-1-11).

The Maroons' attempt at back-to-back come-from-behind wins came up short in Saturday's finale as they dropped a 27-25, 25-22, 16-25, 21-25, 15-13 decision to the host Bluejays.

Smalls hit a team-high 18 kills, while freshman middle blocker Caroline Brander (River Forest, Ill./ Trinity) and Belak added 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Brown finished with 34 digs, and Tarpey collected 50 assists.

Chicago (3-2) returns to action Wednesday, Sept. 9 at the Wisconsin Lutheran Triangular in Milwaukee.
