Maroons Win Two at Gargoyle Classic
CHICAGO -- The University of Chicago volleyball team won a pair of matches Friday on the first day of the Gargoyle Classic at the Ratner Athletics Center.
Chicago opened the day with a 25-17, 25-23, 25-12 win over Wartburg College (10-11). Freshman middle blocker Katie Trela (Glencoe, Ill./ Regina Dominican) led the Maroons, hitting 13 kills in 27 attempts with just one error (.444) in addition to collecting three blocks.
Sophomore outside hitter Isis Smalls (Humble, Texas/ Atascocita) recorded 10 kills, while sophomore outside hitter Colleen Belak (Louisville, Ky./ Presentation Academy) and freshman middle blocker Caroline Brander (River Forest, Ill./ Trinity) hit nine and seven kills, respectively. Brander hit at a .429 clip for the match.
Chicago's .339 attack percentage was its third-best of the season.
Smalls then clubbed 18 kills and notched a .424 hitting percentage as the Maroons defeated Clarkson University (20-3) 25-15, 19-25, 25-21, 25-20 in Friday's nightcap.
Belak collected 10 kills, while Trela finished with six kills and four blocks. Sophomore setter Lauren Tarpey (Greensboro, N.C./ Grimsley) recorded 40 assists.
The Maroons (15-9) return to action Saturday with matches against the Illinois Institute of Technology at 10 a.m. and Buena Vista University at 2 p.m.
