Maroons Complete Gargoyle Classic Sweep
CHICAGO -- The University of Chicago volleyball team won both of its matches Saturday on the second and final day of the Gargoyle Classic to finish the tournament with a 4-0 record.
Three Maroons hit double digit kills as Chicago began the day with a 25-19, 17-25, 27-25, 25-13 win over Buena Vista University (1-21).
Sophomore outside hitter Isis Smalls (Humble, Texas/ Atascocita) and freshman middle blocker Katie Trela (Glencoe, Ill./ Regina Dominican) each collected 11 kills, while freshman outside middle blocker Caroline Brander (River Forest, Ill./ Trinity) added 10. Smalls also notched a team-best .318 attack percentage for the match.
Sophomore setter Lauren Tarpey (Greensboro, N.C./ Grimsley) and freshman libero Samantha Brown (Louisville, Ky./ Mercy Academy) finished with 39 assists and 14 digs, respectively.
Small then clubbed 11 kills in 21 attempts with just one error, good for a .476 percentage, as the Maroons defeated the Illinois Institute of Technology (12-12) 25-19, 25-22, 25-22 in the tournament's final match.
Junior outside hitter Elizabeth Kossnar (Park Ridge, Ill./ Maine South) also played a key role, as she hit seven kills in 17 swings with only one miscue (.353).
Smalls finished the tournament with 50 kills (3.57 per set) and a .378 attack percentage. Tarpey averaged 10.3 assists per set, while Brown tallied a team-high 57 digs (4.1 per set).
The Maroons (17-9) return to action Tuesday night, Oct. 13 at Concordia University Chicago.
