Maroons Fall Twice at IWU Tournament

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The University of Chicago volleyball team dropped a pair of matches Friday at the Illinois Wesleyan University Invitational, falling to the host Titans in four sets before losing in three sets to the College of Mount St. Joseph.

Chicago won the first set against Illinois Wesleyan (18-13) 25-20 but dropped the next three 28-26, 26-24, and 25-23. Sophomore outside hitter Isis Smalls (Humble, Texas/ Atascocita) led the Maroons with 12 kills and four blocks, while freshman middle blocker Caroline Brander (River Forest, Ill./ Trinity) hit eight kills with a .467 percentage to go along with four blocks.

In Friday's second contest, the Maroons fell to Mt. St. Joseph (20-8) 25-20, 27-25, 25-21. Smalls hit a team-best 10 kills, while freshman middle blocker Katie Trela (Glencoe, Ill./ Regina Dominican) contributed six kills with a .417 hitting percentage and a pair of blocks.

Chicago (23-12) concludes the two-day tournament Saturday with matches against Anderson University and Augustana (Ill.) College.
