Maroons Notch 25th Win

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The University of Chicago volleyball team won pair of matches Saturday on the second and final day of the Illinois Wesleyan University Classic. With the two victories, the Maroons improved to 25-13 to match their winningest season in 13 years.

Chicago opened the day with a 25-19, 27-25, 25-18 win over Anderson University (12-13).

Sophomore outside hitter Isis Smalls (Humble, Texas/ Atascocita) led the Maroons with 12 kills, while freshman middle blocker Caroline Brander (River Forest, Ill./ Trinity) collected five blocks, including a pair of solos. Junior outside hitter Elizabeth Kossnar (Park Ridge, Ill./ Maine South) and freshman middle blocker Katie Trela (Glencoe, Ill./ Regina Dominican) each added four blocks.

Brander then clubbed 11 kills with a .360 attack percentage and recorded six blocks as the Maroons defeated Augustana (Ill.) College (11-17) 25-23, 25-21, 20-25, 28-26.

Smalls and Trela finished with 11 and 10 kills, respectively, as Chicago won for the 12th time in its last 15 matches and reached the 25-victory plateau for only the fifth time in the program's 38-year history. Freshman libero Samantha Brown (Louisville, Ky./ Mercy Academy) collected 22 digs.

Chicago hosts the 2009 University Athletic Association Championship at the Ratner Athletics Center Friday and Saturday, Nov. 6-7.
