Maroons Win Two at UAA Championship
CHICAGO -- The University of Chicago volleyball team won a pair of matches on the first day of the 2009 University Athletic Association Championship Friday at the Ratner Athletics Center. After defeating Carnegie Mellon University in five sets, the Maroons swept Brandeis University in three.
In Friday's opening contest, Chicago fell behind Carnegie Mellon (17-12 overall, 3-5 UAA) two sets to one, but rallied for a 25-20, 12-25, 18-25, 27-25, 15-3 win.
Sophomore outside hitter Colleen Belak (Louisville, Ky./ Presentation) hit 15 kills with 22 attempts without an error, while freshman middle blocker Caroline Brander (River Forest, Ill./ Trinity) served seven aces. Junior outside hitter Elizabeth Kossnar (Park Ridge, Ill./ Maine South) collected 10 kills.
Sophomore outside hitter Isis Smalls (Humble, Texas/ Atascocita) then clubbed 11 kills as the Maroons defeated Brandeis University (17-15, 1-8) 25-23, 27-25, 25-23. Kossnar hit nine kills and notched a .350 attack percentage, while Belak finished with seven kills and three aces.
Chicago (27-12, 6-3) completes pool play Saturday at 10 a.m. against fourth-ranked Emory University (32-5, 8-1). A victory would put the Maroons in the 4 p.m. title match, while a loss would place them in the third-place contest at 2 p.m.
Chicago has not finished higher than fifth place in the UAA since a third-place showing 1996.
