Maroons Win Two at UAA Round Robin
NEW YORK CITY -- The University of Chicago volleyball team won a pair of matches Saturday at the University Athletic Association Round Robin at New York University.
The Maroons opened the day with a 25-18, 27-25, 25-17 win over Case Western Reserve University (17-4 overall, 2-2 UAA).
Sophomore outside hitter Isis Smalls (Humble, Texas/ Atascocita) led the Maroons with 13 kills, while junior outside hitter Elizabeth Kossnar (Park Ridge, Ill./ Maine South) hit eight.
Sophomore setter Lauren Tarpey (Greensboro, N.C./ Grimsley) collected 32 assists and three blocks, while freshman middle blocker Caroline Brander (River Forest, Ill./ Trinty) finished with four blocks.
Chicago (20-9, 3-2) then defeated Brandeis University (13-8, 1-3) 25-17, 24-26, 25-20, 26-24 for its seventh consecutive win. The victory also gave the Maroons their first 20-win campaign since 2004 and their second dating back to 1996.
Smalls led three Maroons in double-digit kills with 13. Sophomore outside hitter Colleen Belak (Louisville, Ky./ Presentation Academy) and freshman middle blocker Katie Trela (Glencoe, Ill./ Regina Dominican) hit 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Trela also turned in a team-best four blocks.
Chicago concludes the UAA Round Robin Sunday with matches against fourth-ranked Washington University and the University of Rochester.
