Maroons Gain #3 Seed at UAA Round Robin
NEW YORK CITY -- The University of Chicago volleyball team split two matches on the final day of University Athletic Association Round Robin competition Sunday at New York University. After falling in three sets to fourth-ranked Washington (Mo.) University, Chicago rebounded with a three-set decision over the University of Rochester.
As a result of Sunday's action, the Maroons concluded UAA Round Robin play with a 4-3 record, which gives them the third seed at the Association Championship to be held Nov. 6-7 at the Ratner Athletics Center.
The Maroons opened the day with a 25-17, 25-23, 25-19 loss to Washington (21-3 overall, 6-0 UAA). Freshman middle blocker Katie Trela (Glencoe, Ill./ Regina Dominican) finished the match with eight kills and .375 attack percentage.
Sophomore outside hitter Isis Smalls (Humble, Texas/ Atascocita) then clubbed 11 kills while hitting at a .474 clip as the Maroons wrapped up with weekend with a 25-11, 25-22, 25-20 win over Rochester (14-14, 0-7). Freshman middle blocker Caroline Brander (River Forest, Ill./ Trinity) finished with nine kills and a .333 hitting percentage, while sophomore outside hitter Colleen Belak (Louisville, Ky./ Presentation) collected three blocks.
The win over Rochester improved the Maroons' overall record to 21-10, marking the most wins for a Chicago team since 1996.
The Maroons return to action Wednesday, Oct. 21 for their final home dual match of the year against Dominican University at 7 p.m.
