Maroons Split at UAA Round Robin
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The University of Chicago volleyball team split a pair of matches Sunday on the second day of the University Athletic Association Round Robin at the University of Rochester.
Chicago opened the day with a 25-19, 19-25, 25-19, 25-23 win over New York University (16-5 overall, 1-2 UAA). Sophomore outside hitter Colleen Belak (Louisville, Ky/. Presentation Academy) and freshman middle blocker Katie Trela (Glencoe, Ill./ Regina Dominican) led the Maroons with 11 kills each. Trela and Belak also contributed eight and four blocks, respectively.
Freshman middle blocker Caroline Brander (River Forest, Ill./ Trinity) notched a .333 hitting percentage (9-2-21) to go along with three blocks. Freshman libero Samantha Brown (Louisville, Ky./ Mercy Academy) was credited with 21 digs.
Chicago (13-9, 1-2) concluded the weekend with a 19-25, 25-18, 25-22, 21-25, 15-9 loss to Carnegie Mellon University (10-8, 1-2). Trela and sophomore outside hitter Isis Smalls (Humble, Texas/ Atascocita) each hit 12 kills, while Brander finished with 11.
Chicago returns to action Friday and Saturday, Oct. 9-10 when it hosts the Gargoyle Classic. The Maroons will play two matches each day, beginning Friday against Wartburg College at 3 p.m.
