Maroons Defeat Anderson
CHICAGO -- Senior forward Brooke Bontz (Fort Collins, Colo./ Poudre) scored twice during the game's first 10 minutes as the 15th-ranked University of Chicago women's soccer team defeated Anderson University 7-0 Wednesday at Stagg Field.
Bontz scored unassisted on a 12-yard shot 2:27 into the contest. Senior defender Katie Klamann (Kansas City, Mo./ Notre Dame de Sion) then set up Bontz for a breakaway at the 9:10 mark for her second goal of the game and ninth of the year.
Junior Sarah Loh (Grand Rapids, Mich./ Forest Hills Northern) made it 3-0 in the 19th minute when she headed in a cross from sophomore defender Maggie Tobin (Cincinnati, Ohio/ Ursuline Academy) for her ninth goal of the campaign. Loh and Bontz share the team goal-scoring lead.
Chicago (11-2-1) added a fourth goal in the first half when sophomore Allison Hegel (Vienna, Va./ Jefferson) scored her sixth of the season off a feed from sophomore Liza Wagner (Providence, R.I./ Wheeler School) at 38:57.
After an own goal 2:30 into the second half, senior midfielder Claire Gill (Los Altos Hills, Calif./ King's Academy) took a pass from senior midfielder Melissa Plesac (Hobart, Ind./ Hobart) and fired in her fifth goal of the season in the 52nd minute. Plesac's assist was her team-leading fifth of the year.
Chicago capped the scoring off one of its 16 corner kicks with just over five minutes remaining in the contest when junior midfielder Kate Manuelli (Hightstown, N.J./ Peddie School) headed in a ball off the foot of freshman midfielder Brigette Kragie (Wheaton, Ill./ Wheaton-Warrenville South).
En route to their second straight win overall and 10th consecutive non-conference victory at Stagg Field, the Maroons held Anderson (1-13-2) to four shots.
The Maroons' seven-goal victory margin matched its largest since Oct. 17, 2003 (Chicago 7, Brandeis University 0).
Chicago concludes its five-game homestand Saturday, Oct. 24, when it faces the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse at noon.
