Chicago Wins Fourth Straight
CHICAGO -- Senior forward Brooke Bontz (Fort Collins, Colo./ Poudre) tallied her fourth game-winning goal in as many matches as the 18th-ranked University of Chicago women's soccer team defeated Aurora University 2-0 Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field.
En route to its fourth consecutive victory, Chicago (7-1) held a 23-7 edge in shots, including a 12-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Neither team scored in the first half. Aurora had its best opportunity in the 23rd minute when Molly Thayer broke in alone on the Chicago net, but freshman midfielder Brigette Kragie (Wheaton, Ill./ Wheaton-Warrenville South) caught up to her in the goalmouth and deflected the ball out of play.
Bontz scored the only goal the Maroons would need at the 60:21 mark off an assist from senior midfielder Melissa Plesac (Hobart, Ind./ Hobart). Plesac sent a pass from the right side into the box, where Bontz collected the ball and fired a seven-yard shot past Spartan netminder Liz Wong.
Bontz extended her goal-scoring streak to four games; all four goals have been game-winners.
Chicago added an insurance goal in the 74th minute when sophomore defender Maggie Tobin's (Cincinnati, Ohio/ Ursuline Academy) feed set up sophomore forward Haleigh Stopa's (Normal, Ill./ Central Catholic) first goal of the year.
Wong made 10 saves for Aurora (6-4), while Chicago sophomore goalkeeper Emma Gormley (Carmel, Ind./ Carmel) was credited one save en route to her fourth shutout of the season.
The win extended the Maroons' home field winning streak to four games this year and to seven games dating back to last season.
Chicago continues its homestand Tuesday, Sept. 29 when it entertains fourth-ranked Wheaton (Ill.) College at 4 p.m.
