Chicago Defeats #11 Calvin 3-0

CHICAGO -- The University of Chicago women's soccer team scored twice in the game's first 13 minutes en route to a 3-0 win over 11th-ranked Calvin College Tuesday at Stagg Field.

Calvin suffered its first loss in seven games this season. The Knights had outscored their previous six opponents by a 20-1 margin.

Senior forward Brooke Bontz (Fort Collins, Colo./ Poudre) and junior forward Sarah Loh (Grand Rapids, Mich./ Forest Hills Northern) both scored off rebounds as the Maroons (4-1) jumped out to an early lead.

Bontz tallied her first goal of the year 2:50 into the contest before Loh scored her team-leading fourth of the season at the 12:22 mark. Loh has collected a goal or an assist in all four games in which she has appeared this season.

The Maroons added another goal in the final minute of the first half when sophomore defender Haleigh Stopa (Normal, Ill./ Central Catholic) set up sophomore forward Allison Hegel (Vienna, Va./ Jefferson) for her third goal of the campaign with just 21 seconds left in the period.

Calvin outshot the Maroons 11-4 in the second half, but sophomore goalkeeper Emma Gormley (Carmel, Ind./ Carmel) made six saves to post her second shutout of the year. Kayla Sulzer stopped five shots for Calvin.

Chicago, which is now 1-1 against top-25 opponents, returns to action on the road Saturday, Sept. 19 at Kalamazoo College. Following that contest, the Maroons will play eight of their next nine at Stagg Field.
