Maroons Tie Carnegie Mellon in UAA Opener

PITTSBURGH -- The 15th-ranked University of Chicago women's soccer team played Carnegie Mellon University to a 1-1 tie in the University Athletic Association opener for both teams Saturday at Gesling Stadium.

Senior forward Brooke Bontz (Fort Collins, Colo./ Poudre) scored her fifth goal of the season in the 37th minute when she eluded a defender and fired a shot past CMU netminder Anya Rosen to give the Maroons (8-1-1 overall, 0-0-1 UAA) the advantage.

The lead held until the 86:27 mark when an Alice Mayfield header evened the score at 1-1 and sent the game into overtime.

Sophomore goalkeeper Emma Gormley (Carmel, Ind./ Carmel) collected six saves for the Maroons, while Rosen stopped three shots for Carnegie Mellon (4-4-1, 0-0-1). Both keepers made diving saves in the first overtime period.

The Maroons, whose five-game winning streak came to an end, return to action next Saturday, Oct. 10, when they entertain UAA rival Emory University at 1:30 p.m.
