Chicago Falls to Rochester in Top-25 Clash

CHICAGO -- Bridgette Varin scored a pair of second-half goals as the 21st-ranked University of Rochester defeated the 11th-ranked University of Chicago 3-1 in University Athletic Association women's soccer play Friday night at Stagg Field.

Chicago (9-2-1 overall, 1-1-1 UAA) opened the scoring in the 14th minute when senior defender Kaitlin Meyer (Cincinnati, Ohio/ St. Ursula) tallied her first goal of the season following a corner kick off the foot of freshman midfielder Brigette Kragie (Wheaton, Ill./ Wheaton-Warrenville South).

The Maroons were on the verge of finishing the first half with the lead before Mae Butler's corner kick wound its way into the upper left hand corner of the net to even the score at 1-1 with just 23 seconds remaining in the period.

Varin gave the Yellowjackets (9-1-2, 3-0) the lead for good when she scored from point blank range off a cross from Ellen Coleman just 4:27 into the second stanza. The pair teamed up again in the 86th minute to seal the victory.

Rochester netminder Celeste Hornbach made two saves, while sophomore goalkeeper Emma Gormley (Carmel, Ind./ Carmel) stopped three shots.

The loss snapped the Maroons' seven-game overall unbeaten streak and their nine-game home field winning streak. Chicago lost for only the third time in the last 95 games in which it scored the first goal.
