#18 Chicago Defeats #25 UW-Stevens Point in Double O.T.
CHICAGO -- For the second time in as many games, senior forward Brooke Bontz (Fort Collins, Colo./ Poudre) scored the game-winning goal in overtime, this time giving the 18th-ranked University of Chicago women's soccer team a 1-0 win over the 25th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Wednesday at Stagg Field.
Bontz took a feed from junior midfielder Emily Benoit (Kalamazoo, Mich./ Hackett) and fired an eight-yard shot past Pointer goalkeeper Liz Hunter 1:39 into the second overtime period.
Bontz has accounted for the winning goal in each of the Maroons' last three contests. She tallied in overtime in Chicago's previous outing, a 2-1 win at Kalamazoo College this past Saturday.
Benoit provided the Maroons with their best scoring chances earlier in the game when she sent shots off the post and crossbar.
Chicago (6-1) outshot the Pointers (5-2) 16-5 overall, but by only a 7-5 margin in shots on goal.
Sophomore netminder Emma Gormley (Carmel, Ind./ Carmel) made a season-high five saves for Chicago, including a leaping stop off a direct kick with 16 minutes left in regulation.
Hunter finished the day with six saves for the Pointers, who entered the contest having notched five consecutive shutout victories.
The win was Chicago's first in five games against Wisconsin-Stevens Point since 2006.
