#15 Chicago Defeats #4 Wheaton
CHICAGO -- Sophomore netminder Emma Gormley (Carmel, Ind./ Carmel) collected nine saves, and three different Maroons scored as the 15th-ranked University of Chicago women's soccer team defeated fourth-ranked Wheaton (Ill.) College 3-1 Tuesday at Stagg Field.
Gormley made two key saves early in the match as Wheaton (8-2) took five shots in the game's first 10 minutes.
The game remained scoreless until late in the first half when senior midfielder Claire Gill (Los Altos Hills, Calif./ King's Academy) and junior midfielder Kate Manuelli (Hightstown, N.J./ Peddie School) scored four minutes apart.
Gill collected a loose ball in front of the goal mouth and fired it in for her fourth goal of the season at the 39:59 mark. Manuelli then scored her first goal of the season from 25 yards away at 43:50.
Chicago (8-1) continued the momentum early in the second half when junior forward Sarah Loh (Grand Rapids, Mich./ Forest Hills Northern) scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season just 5:29 into the period.
Wheaton got on the board at the 71:23 mark on a 30-yard shot off the foot of Keri Shannon. The Thunder attempted six shots in the game's final 15 minutes and finished the game with a 25-20 edge.
Hillary Barreto made eight saves for Wheaton, which lost for the first time in seven outings.
The victory extended the Maroons' winning streak to five games and gave Chicago its first win over Wheaton in four tries since 2005. The Maroons also won their eighth straight match at Stagg Field.
Chicago opens University Athletic Association play at Carnegie Mellon University Saturday, Oct. 3 in Pittsburgh.
