Maroons Capture Singles, Doubles Titles at ITA Regional
CHICAGO -- University of Chicago sophomore Kendra Higgins (Vero Beach, Fla./ Vero Beach) won the singles title and teamed up with junior Chrissy Hu (Palo Alto, Calif./ Palo Alto) to claim the doubles crown at the 2009 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Regional.
Hu and Higgins, the defending NCAA Division III doubles champions, won their first matches by 8-0 decisions before winning in straight sets in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds. They then defeated Denison University's Kristin Cobb and Marta Drane 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the championship match.
One of three Maroons to reach the singles semifinals, Higgins defeated sophomore teammate Carmen Vaca Guzman (Wyoming, Mich./ Grandville) 6-4, 6-2 in the final match. Sophomore Jennifer Kung (Sunnyvale, Calif./ Homestead) also reached the semifinals before losing to Vaca Guzman 6-2, 6-1.
DePauw University hosted the first three days of the event. Monday's singles championship match was played on Chicago's Stagg Field Courts.
Higgins and Hu will advance to the ITA Small College Championships to be held Oct. 15-18 in Mobile, Ala.
