O'FALLON, Mo. – The University of Chicago baseball team opened the season on Sunday with a pair of losses to Dominican (Ill.) University and Fontbonne University.

Game One – Dominican 9, UChicago 5

UChicago took a 2-0 lead in its first time at the plate. Junior outfielder Connor Hickey led off with a single, stole second base and scored on senior outfielder Maximilano Larsen's double to the opposite field. Junior outfielder Josh Parks brought in Larsen with a sacrifice fly. However, Dominican jumped out quick with a six-run bottom of the first inning, which included five runs with two outs.

The deficit was trimmed when junior catcher Ian Bohn knocked an RBI single and Parks followed up with another run-scoring sacrifice fly in the second inning. Once again, the Stars had an answer with two runs in the third inning and one more in the fifth.

UChicago's final score of the day came on junior first baseman Brady Sarkon's leadoff solo homer in the fifth.

The Maroons finished with eight hits and made two errors. Dominican had 13 hits, but also struck out 13 times. Hickey went 3-for-4 at the plate.

Junior Brenton Villasenor (0-1 record) took the loss with a two-inning start. Sophomore Patrick Rogers threw the next four innings and struck out six batters. Junior Ravi Bakhai worked one inning of relief and first-year Zach Morochnik struck out three in his collegiate debut.

Game Two – Fontbonne 7, UChicago 4

The Maroons fell victim to another big opening inning as Fontbonne scored four in the frame, including a three-run homer. The visitors were able to tie it by the end of the second though. An error scored Hickey in the first inning, then in the second inning, UChicago batters absorbed two hit-by-pitches and three-straight walks that brought in a pair. Hickey subsequently knocked an RBI single to right field. However, they stranded the bases loaded afterwards.

A run-scoring walk and a two-run single in the fourth provided the final runs of the game for the Griffins, who went on to win 7-4. Sophomore Jacob Petersen took the loss (0-1) with one inning of relief. Junior Joe Liberman got the start, lasting three innings. Senior Ricardo Fernandez, sophomore Daniel Smith and first-year David Clarke also saw action on the mound. All told, UChicago pitchers walked nine batters.

The Maroons were limited to five hits, with Hickey going 2-for-5 at the plate.
