UChicago men's soccer announces seven incoming recruits for the 2017 season

CHICAGO – University of Chicago Head Men's Soccer Coach Mike Babst announced on Wednesday the team's seven incoming freshmen slated to join the Maroons in the 2017 season.

"This is a group of players that stood out to us very early in the process, which gave us an opportunity to really appreciate the key roles they played for highly successful teams," Babst said. "They each add unique qualities that will help to make us a more versatile and dynamic team in the fall, and they have the talent and competitiveness to immediately impact our level in 2017."

The 2016 Maroons put together one of the most successful seasons in program history. They won their first 15 games en route to a 17-1-2 overall record. The team was ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division III by both the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and D3Soccer.com. UChicago went on to win the University Athletic Association (UAA) title and advanced to the NCAA Round of 16. At the season's conclusion, forward Max Lopez, midfielder Nicco Capotosto and goalkeeper Hill Bonin were named All-Americans.

 


Ben Brandt
  • Hometown: Lincolnshire, Ill.
  • Club Team: FC United
  • High School: Adlai Stevenson 
  • Position: Midfielder
  • Player highlights/honors: Currently plays with both FC United 1998 Academy and FC United U-19 Select. His U-19 Select team won the past two Illinois State Cups and qualified for the National League in 2016. By finishing second in their division, they qualified for the 2017 USYS National Championships. Led the team in assists the past three seasons. With Adlai Stevenson High School, Brandt was named to the Chicagoland All-State Team and picked as team MVP.
  • Coach Babst: "Ben is a terrific soccer athlete - balanced, strong and agile. His athleticism makes him a versatile player who can impact the game from different positions. His left foot is elite - his service has been a big reason for his club team's success, and it will be an immediate asset for us."

Isaiah Holquist
  • Hometown: Bala Cynwyd, Pa.
  • Club Team: Philadelphia Union Academy
  • High School: Lower Merion
  • Position: Defender
  • Player highlights/honors: Starting back for Philadelphia Union U18 Academy, who currently sit at the top of the USSDA (U.S. Soccer Development Academy) national standings. Holquist has played four years for the Union, from U14 to U18, where they have qualified for the Academy playoffs every year. The Union U16 team finished third in the USSDA national playoffs. Before joining the Union, he played with FC Delco Academy and Lower Merion Soccer Club.
  • Coach Babst: "Isaiah has proven himself at the top level of youth soccer, consistently earning a spot in the back line for one of the best MLS Academy teams. He is a tenacious defender who plays with great calmness on the ball under pressure, and can pick out passes and initiate the attack with both feet."

Aaron Katsimpalis
  • Hometown: Harrison Township, Mich.
  • Club Team: Vardar Academy
  • High School: L'Anse Creuse
  • Position: Goalkeeper
  • Player highlights/honors: Played for Vardar Academy for past three seasons, where they qualified for the Academy Playoffs in 2015-16. Trained with Sheffield Wednesday and Doncaster Rovers in England. A three-star recruit on Top Drawer Soccer. Also played football at L'Anse Creuse.
  • Coach Babst: "Aaron is an athletic, hard-working and brave goalkeeper. We have watched him play against some of the top teams in the country, and he has proven himself to be very well-rounded. He has good feet, is a strong shot stopper, and he is powerful and decisive coming off his line."

Scott Lich
  • Hometown: Jonesborough, Tenn.
  • Club Team: FC Alliance
  • High School: Science Hill
  • Position: Defender
  • Player highlights/honors: Top Drawer Soccer's No. 1 ranked player in South Region for three years. Played for the TCFC Otters in the PDL (Professional Development League) in 2016. A member of the ODP Region III Team from 2012-2015. Captained the Region III team on their trip to Costa Rica. Captain of the Tennessee State ODP team for five years. Played club with FC Alliance, who were Tennessee State Champions, National League participants and National League Disney Showcase Champions. A four-Year starter and two-year captain at Science Hill. The first freshman in Tennessee history to be named All-State. All-Conference selection 2014-16.
  • Coach Babst: "Scott is the type of competitor who lifts the level of the group. He is a quick and powerful defender who can get forward, combine and attack. He is an ambitious and confident player who has always sought to prove himself at higher levels, and he will no doubt be ready to compete at the college level right away."

Bryce Millington
  • Hometown: West Orange, N.J.
  • Club Team: SDFC 1999 Yellow
  • High School: West Orange
  • Position: Midfield
  • Player highlights/honors: 2016-17 SCANJ (Soccer Coaches Association of New Jersey) First Team All-State with West Orange High School. First Team All-Conference as a senior and Second Team All-Conference as a junior. As team captain in 2016, led the team with 12 assists. SDFC team were Disney Soccer Showcase Champions and Massapequa College Showcase Champions in 2016.
  • Coach Babst: "Bryce is a tall, athletic player who also has very good feet. He can play anywhere up the spine of the field. He covers a lot of ground with his pace, and has the ability to be a major threat on set pieces. He is a very versatile player who could help the team at a number of different spots."

Kevin Quigg
  • Hometown: Norton Shores, Mich.
  • Club Team: Midwest United
  • High School: Mona Shores
  • Position: Midfielder
  • Player highlights/honors: Four-year starter and two-year captain for Mona Shores High School. Three-year First Team All-Conference and First Team All-District. Academic All-State as a senior. Lettered in hockey, football and soccer at Mona Shores. Played club soccer for Midwest United, who finished runner-up in Michigan State Cup three times. Member of the Michigan ODP team in 2014 and 2015.
  • Coach Babst: "Kevin is a physical presence in the midfield who has a great sense of space and how to use his size and strength. He has the power to be a dominant ball winner who can also control the tempo, open up the game and switch the point of attack with his great range of distribution."

Carter Romero
  • Hometown: Austin, Texas
  • Club Team: Georgetown Force
  • High School: Vista Ridge
  • Position: Midfielder/Forward
  • Player highlights/honors: With Vista Ridge High School, he was the top goal scorer in 6A district, and a top-five goal scorer in Texas high school soccer. A two-year captain with Vista Ridge where he was Offensive Player of the Year. Won Texas South State Cup with Georgetown Force three times, where he was a two-year captain. Club team also won Disney Showcase in 2015. A former member of the Region III ODP Team.
  • Coach Babst: "Carter is an attacker who can play multiple positions. He is a player who will score some extraordinary goals. He has a really unique blend of agility, pace and extremely quick feet. He has the potential to be a very dynamic playmaker for us."
