WAUKESHA, Wis. – The University of Chicago men's soccer team scored early and held strong defensively to top Carroll University 1-0 on Tuesday night.
The No. 1-ranked Maroons kept their perfect record intact at 11-0. The Pioneers fell to 2-9-1 on the season.
Max Lopez wasted little time, as he scored on the first shot of the game in the seventh minute. The junior forward netted his team-best 13th goal of the year off an assist by freshman defender Scott Lich. It was also his seventh game-winning goal.
The visitors took the 1-0 lead in the halftime break, with a 6-0 shot advantage in hand.
Junior forward Matthew Koh nearly doubled the lead in the 58th minute on the run, but his shot hit the post.
Carroll pressed hard in the closing minutes and senior goalkeeper Hill Bonin recorded an important save with just under two minutes left in game. The Pioneers sent one last shot wide as time expired.
Bonin (11-0 record) posted his fourth shutout of the year, making two saves between the pipes.
