SURPRISE, Ariz. – The University of Chicago men's tennis team bounced back to win all three of its matches at day two of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Oracle Cup on Friday.
After absorbing a three-set defeat on Thursday, the doubles tandem of senior Max Hawkins and freshman Tyler Raclin started off Friday with a matchup against No. 3-seed University of St. Thomas. Hawkins and Raclin rolled through their opponents, winning 6-4, 6-1 to advance to the fifth-place match. They were met there by the No. 1-seeds from Johns Hopkins University. Once again, the Maroons triumphed in straight sets 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).
In singles, No. 2-seed David Liu of UChicago took on Nikolai Parodi (Claremont-Mudd-Scripps) in the consolation draw. Liu stormed out to a big lead in the first set before ultimately hanging on in the tiebreak 7-6 (7-5). The junior then took care of business in the second set 6-3 to end the match. His final opponent will be No. 1-seed Kai Yuen Leung (Skidmore College) in the fifth-place match on Saturday.
