NAPERVILLE, Ill. – The University of Chicago softball team controlled game one, but let a late lead in game two slip away for a doubleheader split at North Central College on Saturday.

The Maroons moved to 16-9 on the season and the Cardinals ran their record to 13-13.

Game One – UChicago 6, North Central 3

The hosts went up 2-0 in their opening at-bats courtesy of a triple and a wild pitch. But the Maroons quickly flipped the script with five scores in the top of the third inning. UChicago collected seven hits in the frame. With the bases loaded, senior designated player Anna Woolery doubled in two runs. Sophomore first base Carly Schulz knocked a two-run double as well soon after, and freshman shortstop Emma Nelson singled to center to make it 5-2.

Sophomore second base Colleen Bennett lifted a sacrifice fly to the outfield in the sixth inning to provide the sixth run for the Maroons. The Cardinals pulled off a double steal of home plate and second base in the bottom of the seventh, but UChicago freshman pitcher Megan Stoppelman stranded two runners on base to end the game.

Stoppelman improved her season record to a team-best 7-2. She threw a complete game with three runs, 13 hits and one walk.

Offensively, the Maroons totaled 10 hits. Nelson went 2-for-2 and freshman outfielder Christie Ambrose was 2-for-3 at the plate.

Game Two – North Central 4, UChicago 3

The second game of the day went into extra innings after a late North Central rally. The Cardinals scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to keep the game going. The hosts then walked off with the win in the eighth inning thanks to three consecutive singles.

After North Central took a 1-0 lead early on, UChicago tied it up in the third on sophomore outfielder Maeve Garvey's RBI groundout. The Maroons then tallied one run in the fifth and one more in the sixth to draw ahead 3-1. Garvey doubled and then scored on an error, and Woolery's infield single accounted for another run.

UChicago finished with eight hits and one error. Garvey and Ambrose both hit 2-for-4.

Junior pitcher Molly Moran (6-5 record) took the loss in 7.1 innings. She struck out four while allowing four runs (three earned), 10 hits and one walk.
