CHICAGO – A big second quarter by New York University put the University of Chicago women's basketball team in a double-digit hole and the Maroons ended up losing to the Violets 71-55 on Friday night.
The loss dropped UChicago to 9-6 (1-3 in the University Athletic Association) while improving No. 9-ranked NYU to a 14-1 (3-1 UAA) record on the season.
The Maroons came out strong, dropping 23 first-quarter points on the Violets. However, the visitors responded with ironclad second quarter defense en route to holding UChicago to seven points. In addition to their stalwart defense, NYU also shot 9-for-14 (64.3 percent) from three-point range on the evening. The Violets kept working for prime position on the block to draw fouls, and their full-court press proved effective throughout.
Sophomore guard Madison Dunbar served as the home team's focal point offensively in the first half, netting 10 points, which included converting both of her three-pointers. Junior guard Kaitlyn Read led all first half scorers for NYU with 14. Read consistently drew fouls and impressed at the free throw line by hitting 12 of 13. The Violets entered the break with a 46-30 edge courtesy of an 11-point run to kick off the second quarter.
The Maroons came out aggressive in the second half, cutting the lead to 10 with 6:06 left. But NYU maintained control of the flow and went into the final quarter up 16. Both teams ended up scoring 25 points each in the second half, allowing the Violets to close out the double-digit victory.
The final statistics were quite close in rebounds (31-31), assists (16-14 UChicago) and turnovers (28-27 NYU).
