ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The University of Chicago women's basketball team utilized shutdown defense to rout No. 25-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps by a score of 64-36 on Friday.

The Maroons won their season opener and posted their lowest points allowed in a game since a 69-28 win over IIT on Jan. 4, 2016. The Athenas fell to 1-1.

With the score tied at 8-8, UChicago made its move. The Maroons locked down the Athenas for the rest of the half, holding C-M-S without a field goal for 13 minutes of game time. UChicago outscored the California squad 20-1 in that time frame to take a commanding 28-9 lead into the break.

While the Maroons only hit 33 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes, the defense hounded C-M-S relentlessly. The Athenas shot 2 of 19 from the field (10.5 percent) and turned the ball over 18 times. UChicago sophomore guard Jamie Kockenmeister hit a three-pointer just before the halftime buzzer to give herself six first-half points, and freshman guard Miranda Burt equaled that scoring output.

The Maroons picked up right where they left off, opening up the third quarter with a steal leading to a layup. A bucket from sophomore forward Olariche Obi put her team ahead by 25 points at 36-11. The Athenas began to hit some shots in the third quarter, but UChicago still held a comfortable 46-23 lead at the conclusion of the third quarter.

Three-pointers by junior guard Elizabeth Nye and Kockenmeister gave UChicago a 29-point advantage. The Maroons took their largest lead of the night at 58-25 thanks to six-straight points from freshman guard Mia Farrell.

UChicago ended up shooting 43.1 percent from the field while limiting C-M-S to 24.5 percent. The Maroons hit eight three-pointers but the Athenas went 0-for-7 from deep. Rebounds went to UChicago by a 38-31 margin. The two teams combined for 53 turnovers.

Obi's 13 points led all scorers, Kockenmeister put up 10 points and Farrell tallied 10 points in 11 minutes off the bench. Obi and senior forward Britta Nordstrom snagged six rebounds apiece.
