Lake, Obi Lead Women's Hoops Past Lake Forest, 76-32

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The No. 22 University of Chicago women's basketball team held host Lake Forest College to just two points in the game's first quarter and never looked back en route to a 76-32 nonleague win to open the Maroons' season Wednesday. 

Sophomore Taylor Lake led the way for UChicago (1-0) with 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor and junior Olariche Obi added a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, hitting 6-of-11 shots from the field.

UChicago (1-0) opened the first quarter on a 23-2 run and went on to hold the Foresters (0-1) to just 10 points in the first half, building a commanding 44-10 lead at the break. Sophomore Mia Farrell opened the game with a layup following a Foresters turnover, as UChicago never trailed in contest and led by as many as 44 with six minutes to play in the fourth frame.

Lake scored the bulk of her points – 11 in total -- in the second quarter, making all four of her shot attempts and both free throws.

The Maroons dominated in the paint, 36-16, and on the boards, 59-33, aided by first-year Marissa Igunbor, who snagged a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with nine points off the bench.

While the turnover category was near even – the Maroons committed 23 giveaways compared to 29 for Lake Forest, UChicago capitalized off its takeaways, scoring 29 points off Forester miscues. Twenty-six offensive rebounds also turned into points for the Maroons, who recorded 25 second-chance points compared to just four for the hosts.

UChicago finished 28-of-71 from the field (39.4 percent) and held Lake Forest to 20.8 percent (11-of-53) shooting for the game.

Farrell finished the game with an all-around performance for the Maroons, chipping in nine points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists, and sophomore Miranda Burt added eight points, hitting 2-of-3 from 3-point land.

The Maroons won their season opener for the third-straight season and improved their series lead over the Foresters to a 19-11 margin, winning their fourth-straight.
