CHICAGO, Ill. -- The close matches did not go the home side's way as the University of Chicago wrestling team lost a dual meet to Wheaton College 27-11 on Thursday. The Maroons fell to 0-3 while the Thunder improved to 1-0 on the season.
Freshman Charlie Banaszak provided UChicago's first points of the night. Banaszak was dominant in his 17-2 technical fall victory at 141 pounds. He scored 11 points in the first period thanks to two takedowns and a pair of near falls. Banaszak sewed up the technical fall in the last 30 seconds of the match.
The two teams wrestled a number of close bouts as four matches were decided by one or two points. The matches at 184 pounds and 197 pounds were both decided by takedowns in the final 30 seconds.
Maroons senior Jeff Tyburski closed out the evening with a third-period pin in the heavyweight class. Tyburski rode his opponent out in the second period and then turned him early in the third to claim the victory.
