CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Chicago wrestling team opened its competitive season with a home dual loss 25-12 to North Central College on Thursday.
The Cardinals started strong by winning the opening five bouts of the night to go up 19-0. UChicago then won three of the next four. Sophomore Paul Papoutsis got the Maroons going at 165 pounds with a 10-5 win. The score was tied 3-3 going into the third, and then Papoutsis scored a reversal and then followed it with a three-point near fall.
In his collegiate debut at 174 pounds, freshman Nick Ferraro went ahead with an early takedown and led the rest of the way to earn a 10-6 decision. Senior Mario Palmisano dominated his opponent at 197 pounds with aggressive attacks and finished off with a pin at the 2:44 mark of the first period.
UChicago has four wrestling teams from the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) on their schedule this season – North Central, Wheaton College, Elmhurst College and Augustana College.
