HERSHEY, Pa. – University of Chicago wrestler Devan Richter lost two of his matches and was eliminated at day one of the NCAA Division III Championships on Friday.
Richter ended his freshman season with a 15-7 overall record at 125 pounds. He made his postseason debut after winning his bracket at the NCAA Midwest Regional on Feb. 28.
Richter started the tournament against No. 1-seed and defending national champion Mike Fuenffinger of Augsburg College. Fuenffinger controlled the match and came away with an 8-0 major decision.
In the double elimination format, Richter's next match came against Wheaton College's Carlos Fuentez. The UChicago freshman had previously defeated his Wheaton opponent in the NCAA Midwest Regional final. Richter took a 2-1 lead after the first period of action, but trailed 4-3 heading into the third and final period. Fuentez started the third on top position and Richter nearly secured an escape that would have tied the score. However, Richter's attempt at a reversal was thwarted and Fuentez scored a three-point near fall. Fuentez ended up winning the match 8-3.
