SHENANDOAH, Texas – The University of Chicago swimming and diving teams came out of the blocks firing on all cylinders in the evening finals and submitted one of the best NCAA sessions in school history on the third day of the 2017 NCAA Division III Championships on Friday.
The biggest performance of the day belonged to the women's 800-yard freestyle relay – senior Alison Wall, senior Maya Scheidl, senior Cara LoPiano and sophomore Hannah Eastman. The Maroon quartet pieced together a blazing group performance that broke the school record by more than four seconds with a final time of 7:22.15. That mark allowed UChicago to take fourth place for its highest relay finish ever on the women's side. Additionally, Wall's lead leg time of 1:49.37 was also a new school record.
Along with the women's relay, the Maroons excelled with four more All-American results. Freshman Agnes Lo became a two-time All-American in women's diving after taking fifth on the one-meter board with a score of 428.45. Previously, she took seventh place on the three-meter board on Wednesday.
Freshman Reona Yamaguchi placed fifth in the men's 100-yard breaststroke (54.66) in a race that saw the NCAA record broken for the second-straight season.
Sophomore Michael Todd was an Honorable Mention All-American in the men's 200-yard butterfly. Todd finished 10th and broke the school record in the event by more than a second with a time of 1:48.39.
The men's 800-yard freestyle relay also captured Honorable Mention All-American status after taking 15th in 6:45.22. The relay included freshman Taye Baldinazzo, senior Jonathan Simoneau, freshman Aaron Guo and sophomore Dalton Mitchell.
