UChicago volleyball loses twice at Elmhurst Invite

ELMHURST, Ill. – The University of Chicago volleyball team lost both of its matches at day one of the Elmhurst College Invitational on Friday. The No. 17-ranked Maroons fell to 0-2 to start the year.

Dominican 3, UChicago 1 (25-19, 31-33, 25-20, 25-20)

The Stars led the first set 10-6 before embarking on a 12-6 run. Dominican was one point away from ending the set when UChicago ripped off six-straight points. But the Stars scored the next rally to take the first set 25-19.

In the second set, the Maroons battled back from an early deficit to tie the score at 24-all. After the two sides exchanged more points, UChicago pushed through to win the set 33-31. The offense was clicking all game, totaling 23 kills and a .327 attack percentage.

Dominican reasserted control in the third and fourth sets, winning by identical 25-20 scores to close out the match. Junior outside hitter Maren Loe and senior outside hitter Morgan Barry provided 75 percent of the total kills, combining for 40 of the team's 53. Setter Ragine Graves handed out a career-high 42 assists.

Elmhurst 3, UChicago 2 (23-25, 25-15, 25-16, 26-28, 15-12)

The nightcap featured a pair of nationally-ranked teams as the Maroons faced the No. 12-ranked Bluejays. The first set saw UChicago take the early lead at 7-4. Elmhurst responded and the score was eventually tied at 19-19. The hosts took a 22-20 lead, but the Maroons held their own and closed out the set on a kill by Maren Loe at 25-23.

In the second set, Elmhurst owned a two-point lead midway through before racing away on an 11-3 run to take the set 25-15. That momentum carried over to the third set, which the hosts won 25-16.

UChicago hung tough in the fourth set. The visitors led 16-9 before Elmhurst rallied back to gain the lead at 22-21. Barry came up clutch at the end with two-straight kills at 27-26 and an opposing attack error forced a deciding fifth set.

The two teams answered each score in kind and were tied at 12-12. However, Elmhurst then scored three-straight points to end the proceedings at 15-12. The home team came up big on serves with 13 aces in the match. Loe and Barry led UChicago in kills again with 20 and 18, respectively.
