BLOOMINGTON, Ill.– Sarah Muisenga and Madison Pearson each recorded double-digit kill performances but it wasn't enough to top a hot-hitting Illinois Wesleyan University squad that snapped the University of Chicago volleyball team's four-match winning streak Tuesday.
Muisenga led the Maroons (5-2) with 11 kills and 11 digs and Pearson added 10 kills and and a solo block in the three-set loss, as UChicago fell by scores of 25-23, 25-23, and 25-22 to the host Titans (4-4).
Freshman Emma Griffith delivered 35 assists and Anne Marie Stifter recorded a match-best 22 digs for the Maroons, who battled IWU to 13-all midway through the first set. The Titans made a move to pull away after that, rattling off five unanswered points to take an 18-14 lead.
But kills from Pearson, Muisenga and Audrey Scrafford and a Frances McDonald service ace helped the Maroons climb back in the match and tie it at 21 before IWU finished out Set 1 by outscoring UChicago 4-1.
UChicago had solid leads (10-6 and 18-15) in Set 2 – with both teams locked at 21 again in the second set – but the Titans were again able to hold on down the stretch to take a 2-0 lead. The Maroons didn't give in, leading once more in Set 3 (15-14), but IWU regained control late to close out the sweep.
The Titans hit .267 for the match, to edge UChicago at .214, and both teams had 5.0 total team blocks.
Scrafford chipped in nine kills, Madeleine Bol had two solo blocks and a block assist, and McDonald added 11 digs to round out the Maroons' leaders.
Tyler Brown led the hosts with 17 kills, Caitlin Meyer had 41 assists and Jessca McCall added 17 digs in the victory.
