ATLANTA, Ga. – The No. 20 University of Chicago volleyball team dropped a four-set match to No. 9 Carnegie Mellon in Saturday's UAA Championship third-place match in Atlanta to finish fourth overall in the eight-team field.
The Maroons (23-8) fell by scores of 25-22, 26-24, 15-25, 25-16 to finish the UAA Championships with a 1-2 record after defeating Rochester in the opening round and then falling to eventual champion Washington-St. Louis, who defeated Emory 3-1 Saturday.
UChicago – who has six wins over regionally-ranked opponents -- will now await a potential at-large bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament, with the selection show set for Monday at 11:30 am CT.
Junior Sarah Muisenga had 15 kills and Madison Pearson added 10 kills to lead the Maroon offense, while first-year Emma Griffith delivered 43 assists. Defensively, Anne Marie Stifter (18), Griffith (16), Muisenga (12), Pearson (11) and Frances McDonald (11) all totaled double-digit numbers.
After dropping the first two sets in tight fashion, UChicago rebounded with a huge third set, downing the Tartans (29-4) by a 25-15 margin. The Maroons hit a crisp .257 in that frame, recording 14 kills and just five errors compared to a .050 attack percentage (nine kills, seven errors) for CMU.
First-year Fredericka Paulson had three of her nine kills in the third set to aid the Maroons offense.
But the Tartans would respond in the final set, hitting. 258 with 10 kills and two errors. Lauren Mueller and Sarah Jurgens led the Tartans offensive effort with 14 kills each.
