Zeb Sion enters his third season at Chicago and first as the associate head coach for both track & field and cross country in 2009-10, concentrating his efforts on the throwing events. Along with his event specific coaching responsibilities, Sion designs and implements the entire team’s strength and conditioning program.
Since joining the Chicago staff for the 2008 season, Sion has tutored his athletes to six All-America performances, 11 University Athletic Association titles, and 28 All-UAA performances. Sion’s throwers have rewritten the Chicago and UAA record books over the past two years having broken school records in the women’s indoor and outdoor shot put, discus, weight throw, and hammer throw numerous times while also breaking four UAA championship meet records (indoor shot, outdoor shot, discus, and hammer).
This past season, Chicago throwers Claire Ray and Nicole Murphy accounted for four All-America performances. Ray earned All-America honors by placing in the top eight at the NCAA outdoor championships in the shot put (4th), discus (6th), and hammer (7th). Murphy earned All-America honors in the shot put during the indoor season by placing 7th. Chicago female throwers earned either a UAA title and/or an All-UAA performance in every throwing event that they competed in during the indoor and outdoor conference championships. Murphy, sophomore Kristin Constantine, and Ray swept the shot put at the indoor UAA championships for the second straight season. Chicago throwers earned both the Women’s UAA Field MVP awards during the 2009 championships with Murphy being recognized indoor and Ray outdoor.
In his inaugural season, Sion tutored Ray and Murphy to All-American performances by placing second in the discus and shot put, respectively, at the NCAA Division III outdoor championships. Ray and Murphy, along with efforts from Kristin Constantine and Tiffany Hosten, swept the podium in the indoor shot put, outdoor shot put, and hammer throw at the 2008 UAA championships. The male throwers accounted for one UAA champion and six All-UAA performances, as well.
These exceptional performances helped both the men’s and women’s teams win the 2008 UAA Indoor Championship team titles and place second at the UAA Outdoor Championships. Sion and his colleagues were honored as the UAA men’s and women’s indoor coaching staffs of the year in 2008.
Sion came to Chicago after a one-year stint as a graduate assistant coach at Idaho State University in 2006-07.
While at Idaho State, he coached one Big Sky Conference champion, two NCAA West Regional qualifiers, and one All-NCAA West Regional athlete. Three school records were broken during the 2007 season. In addition, 10 athletes -- including his brother Jed -- earned All-Big Sky Conference accolades.
A native of Pocatello, Idaho, Sion threw the shot put and discus for the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) from 2001-05. Upon his graduation, he attended graduate school at Idaho State, where he completed his eligibility.
During his athletic career, Sion was a two-time NCAA championships qualifier and two-time All-Region shot putter, once at Georgia Tech and once at Idaho State. He earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors four times and All-Big Sky Conference recognition one year. In 2004, Sion was the ACC shot put champion. At one point, Sion held the Georgia Tech indoor (59' 3/4"), Georgia Tech outdoor (59' 5"), and Idaho State outdoor (60' 2") records in the shot put. He is currently the Idaho high school state record holder in the shot put (64' 3").
Sion graduated with highest honors from Georgia Tech in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in Management. He then earned his master's degree in Physical Education and Athletic Administration from Idaho State in 2007. He is a certified USA Track and Field Level 1 Coach and also a USA Weightlifting Sports Performance Coach.
Sion resides in Hyde Park with his wife, the former Marcela Tuñón.
