Chris Hall begins his seventh season as the University of Chicago's head coach for
mens and womens cross country and track & field in 2007-08. During the past six years, his teams have experienced tremendous
growth and become recognized as among the top programs in the NCAA Division
III.
Hall has guided the men's and women's cross country programs to the NCAA
Division III championships twice since his arrival in 2001.
The men's team placed ninth -- the highest finish in the program's history -- in 2005, following a 16th place showing the previous year. Hall's women's teams finished 18th in 2003 and 19th in 2006.
The
men's and women's track & field programs have been consistently ranked in the top-20
during the past two years with a highest national finish of seventh (women's outdoor) in
2006
Hall's cross country and track & field teams have also enjoyed tremendous success at the conference level as demonstrated by University Athletic Association championships in men's cross country (2002, 2004) and men's indoor track & field (2002) as well as a dozen UAA runner-up performances (men's cross country 2001, 2003, 2005; women's cross country 2003; men's indoor track & field 2003; men's outdoor track & field 2002; women's indoor track & field 2003, 2006, 2007; and women's outdoor track & field (2003, 2005, 2007).
Halls mens
cross country teams have featured two All-Americans and 20 All-UAA performers since 2001, while the women have boasted
four All-Americans and 13 All-UAA runners.
In track & field,
Halls mens teams have produced two NCAA Division III individual
champions, 19 All-Americans, 29 national qualifiers, and 36 UAA champions.
During that time, the womens teams have featured seven All-Americans,
18 national qualifiers, and 30 UAA champions.
Halls mens
track & field teams have posted four NCAA Division III top-25 team
finishes, twice during the indoor season and twice during the outdoor
campaign. Hall led the Chicago men to the 2002 UAA indoor championship,
following which he was named the UAA Coach of the Year.
Hall is most
pleased, in terms of the development of the teams, is the growth in
numbers and quality. Upon his arrival at Chicago in 2001, the women's
cross country/track & field squads finished last in the UAA with approximately 20 athletes. Within
five years the team numbered about 50 and was ranked as high as seventh
in the country. The men's teams have
been consistently ranked among the top-20 each year.
The Midwest Region Coach of the Year
in cross country and indoor track & field in 2004, Hall has also been
part of the UAA Coaching Staff of the Year on three occasions. He currently
serves as the Midwest Region representative and is the vice-president
of the NCAA Division III track and cross country coaches association.
Hall arrived at Chicago
after serving as head mens and womens cross country coach
and assistant track & field coach at the University of Wisconsin-Stout
from 1992-2001. He was named the head mens track & field coach
prior to the 1995 season.
During his tenure
at Wisconsin-Stout, Halls teams produced 28 All-Americans and two
national champions. In 1996, Halls mens outdoor track &
field team finished fourth at the NCAA Division III Championship, marking
the schools best-ever national track & field finish. Also in
1996, he was chosen the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
Mens Track Coach of the Year.
Prior to his appointment
at UW-Stout, Hall served as assistant womens cross country coach
at the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) from 1991-92 and as assistant
cross country and track & field coach at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse
from 1989-91.
Hall was an All-American
distance runner at UW-LaCrosse, where he earned bachelors and masters
degrees in kineselogy in 1989 and 1990, respectively.
