Tony Martinez begins his fifth year at UChicago in 2019-20 and currently serves as Assistant Director – Facilities & Operations. He was hired as Athletic Facilities Manager - Facilities Services in September 2015.
His main oversight includes four full-time Athletic Aides, day-to-day operations, the fitness centers & equipment, the athletic fields, grounds, and contractor maintenance.
Martinez comes from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) Athletic Department. At UMBC, he served as the Manager of Events/Facilities from 2012-2015. Prior to being promoted, Martinez served as the Equipment Manager for Athletics and Recreation from 2010-2012 and the Competitive Sport Specialist (Recreation Intern) from 2009-2010. During his time at UMBC, he was co-awarded the “Commitment to Excellence” award by the Campus of Student Affairs for his work with Turf Replacement/Track renovation at UMBC Stadium. He also taught Physical Education classes from 2013-2015.
Prior to his professional career, Martinez played hockey at UMBC where he was awarded the "Retriever Award." This award goes to a club athlete who exemplifies great leadership qualities on and off the playing surface.
Martinez earned his bachelor’s degree from UMBC in History and earned his master’s degree from the University of Illinois in Sport and Recreation Management.
