On Friday evening in the outskirts of Zagreb, the UChicago men lost their first game to local club NK Spansko 3-1. After giving up a penalty in the first half and conceding a cracking goal from 30 yards in the second, Terrell White scored for the Maroons in only his second appearance as a striker. Threaded into goal by Michael Choquette, White side-stepped a defender and rounded the keeper to score.

Despite several good chances in the first half coming from the right flank involving Matt Vecchitto and Kyle Kurfirst, the Maroons were held by a very technical and organized Croatian side. NK Spansko plays in the Croatian third tier and showed their class as the game wore into the second half and scored their third goal off a rebound from 20 yards. Goalkeeper Brett Wiesen stopped several excellent shots late in the game to keep UChicago in the game.

Despite the loss, the team looked sharp for their first game after only a week of training and the absence of many key players. Everyone looks forward to playing our next opponent NK Buje on Sunday. On Saturday, we leave for the Istrian town of Umag and will visit the ancient city of Pula and its Roman ruins and the picturesque Mediterranean fishing port of Rovinj on the way.
