Men's Basketball / Guard / Freshman / Palatine, Ill.
Ryan Martin is a first-year guard on the UChicago men's basketball team. The Maroons are currently tied for first place in the University Athletic Association with a 5-2 record. UChicaog owns a 12-6 mark so far this season.
Head Coach Mike McGrath: "Ryan has been hurt since early in the year with a back problem. Back issues are notoriously troublesome and this has been the case for Ryan. Challenges in identifying the problem and the rehab process can be vague and lingering. Ryan has dealt with challenge as well as any athlete I have seen. He has been a consummate teammate. I do not believe that he has missed any part of any practice since his injury and he has been incredibly diligent with his rehab. He is there for the team and his teammates every day and brings positive energy in the face of a very demoralizing situation. He has been a great maroon. During the recruiting process and before his injury, Ryan was identified as a player who could have a big impact on our program and he was displaying that prior to being hurt. We are excited to see the more significant things he can do when he is healthy, but in the meantime, he has been awesome."
Teammate Jordan Baum: "Even though Ryan has been hurt most of the year, he has continued to be involved with everything we do as a team on and off the court. He has been a great teammate and has been working really hard all year to rehab from an unfortunate back injury. We are really looking forward to getting him back on the court as we get ready for these last few weeks of UAA play."
Other OOC Nominees
Scott Wu (Men's Swimming & Diving)
- Head Coach Jason Weber: "Scott has had an excellent season so far, probably his best yet as a member of our team, as he went season-best times this past weekend to help guide our men’s team to dominating wins over two ranked opponents in Calvin and DePauw. Not only has Scott shown he can be a contributor in the pool with his performance but he’s also made a huge impact on this team with his leadership, high energy and positive attitude. Scott is regularly one of the loudest and most positive guys during practice and meets, cheering on and pushing his teammates to make them better. This past weekend Scott volunteered to announce our graduating seniors during senior recognition and he added his trademark flair and enthusiasm, creating a very exciting and memorable moment for all."
