Men's Track & Field / Middle Distance / Sophomore / Pembroke Pines, Fla.
Majors: Anthropology and History
Will Shine is a sophomore runner on the UChicago men's track & field team. At the Wheaton Invitational, Shine won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:43.19.
Head Coach Chris Hall: "Will won the steeplechase this past weekend with a very solid performance of 9:43.19. This was a 14-second improvement over last week. A week ago, our bus arrived late to the meet and Will had to jump out and immediately race. He handled that well last week but given the opportunity to prep a bit better this past weekend, he had a really strong early season performance. I am even more pleased with how well he raced based upon the fact that we have done such little technical work in the steeplechase."
Teammate Owen Melia: "To say that Will Shine has natural talent in the steeplechase is an understatement (he has the best trail leg in all of Chicagoland), but it also ignores the grueling work that Will puts in each week to get himself to the front of races. He works incredibly hard in practice and has been training for these outdoor races with determination since December. One time, he even did a 13-mile long run to get ready for the outdoor season. The team benefits from Will's determination, focus and willingness to lead the fast reps. A dedicated 3,000-meter steeplechase training group has sprung up around him, which he leads with wisdom and grace.
"Off the track, Will works just as hard: he is devoted to the study of anthropology and he makes sacrifices to be a kind friend. Will is always available to lend a sympathetic ear. It is a pleasure to be Will's teammate and friend, and I know that Will Shine will shine many years down the line!"
