Charlie Pei and Joshua Xu play singles and doubles on the UChicago men's tennis team. The Maroon duo earned a comeback win at the No. 2 doubles position, while also providing the clinching singles points at No. 3 and No. 4 to give their team a 5-2 victory over Gustavus Adolphus College. UChicago subsequently advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals.
Head Coach Jay Tee: "Charlie and Josh accounted for three of our five points in our win versus Gustavus in the regional championship. Charlie and Josh paired together in doubles to clinch the sweep, battling back from 5-7 down and saving a match point in the process. In singles, they provided us the two points we needed to win the match and send the team to the Elite Eight for the fourth time in five years. In addition to their wins, they were the emotional leaders during the weekend, providing energy and a positive attitude for the rest of the team."
Teammate Ninan Kumar: "Both Charlie and Josh have been instrumental to our team's success this year. Charlie has been a perfect teammate and leader for the team on and off the court. I have been extremely impressed with his dominant performance in both singles and doubles that has put him on the verge of becoming UChicago’s wins leader. Josh has also been a great leader for our team, especially with the amount of energy he brings to each match. He has clinched some big matches for us, and I look forward to watching him win some more big matches for us as we finish out this season."
