Erik Kerrigan and Ninan Kumar are a doubles tandem on the UChicago men's tennis team. The Maroon pairing helped lead UChicago to another NCAA Final Four appearance as a team, winning both of their No. 1 doubles matches versus Amherst College and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Later in the week, Kerrigan and Kumar advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship for the second time in their careers, earning All-American status in the process. They finished their season with a 26-8 overall doubles record.
Head Coach Jay Tee: "Ninan and Erik had a fantastic weekend in the team championships as well as the individual tournament. The duo defeated the No. 1 teams from Amherst and CMS in the Elite Eight and Final Four, and then made a run to the semifinals of the doubles tournament. In addition to the wins, the energy they provided to the team was immeasurable. They provide a spark to the rest of the team, set the tone, and give confidence to the others on the court."
Teammate Charlie Pei: "Erik and Ninan have been instrumental to our success this season, bringing consistent energy on the doubles court. Playing next to them certainly gets me pumped up and helps me as well as the rest of my teammates. Ending the dual play season on a 14-match winning streak as well as reaching the semifinals of NCAA doubles individuals was very impressive and a testament to their hard work and dedication, and I’m sure this duo will continue to have success in the future."
Teammate Alejandro Rodriguez: "Ninan and Erik are two guys who drive the energy for our team every match we play. They have done an incredible job this season in setting an example for the rest of the team to follow, and we would not have had the season we did without them. I am really excited to have another season to play with and learn from them, and I know they will help us get over the line next year!"
