Men's Cross Country / Senior / Southlake, Texas
Ansel Richards is a senior runner on the UChicago men's cross country team. At the Loyola Lakefront Invite last weekend, Richards ran a lifetime-best time of 25:39 in the men's 8K and scored as the fourth runner for the Maroons. The field of 349 runners included nearly a dozen NCAA Division I teams.
Head Coach Chris Hall: "Now in his senior year, Ansel seems to be running with a renewed level of confidence. Going into this season, he had never been in a scoring position on our team and ran a lifetime PR of 26:43 in his sophomore season. This year, he has PR'd in all three of our meets and been consistently scoring for us. This past weekend, Ansel ran a new lifetime-best of 25:39 as our fourth man (the highest he has ever run on our team in his four years at UChicago). His consistent performances this season are absolutely setting a tone for the rest of our team and he has become someone we know we can count on every day."
Teammate Owen Melia: "Ansel is the model of the consistent cross country runner: he had a great summer, worked hard every day in preseason, and approaches each race with a consistent intensity. This consistency makes Ansel a great teammate and an even better friend - I feel lucky to call him both. Ansel's food obsessions, however, have not been so consistent. He came to campus in 2015 the biggest cereal advocate one could find, but some time during sophomore year switched his allegiances to Subway subs. I think he's back on cereal now, and it could be the perfect mixture of simple and complex carbs which gives him a little something extra on race day."
Other OOC nominees
Jackson Ross (Football)
- Head Coach Chris Wilkerson: "Jackson had another great day Saturday. He led our team in tackles with 13, forced two fumbles and had 1.5 tackles for loss while helping secure a shutout for our team. Jackson always brings the juice and provides an outstanding physical presence. He has worked very hard at his craft and continues to improve with each week. I know he will do anything to help our team and will continue to battle no matter what the situation. Jackson has done a great job leading our defense and I look forward to watching him continue to grow."
Scott Lich (Men's Soccer)
- Head Coach Mike Babst: "Scott was instrumental in our two wins last week. He helped change the dynamic in the second half of both games with his toughness, competitiveness and ability to get involved in the attack. He is a leader in our back line."
