Mike McGinley is a senior defensive lineman for the UChicago football team. Last Saturday, McGinley led the defense to its second-straight shutout in a 49-0 win at Lawrence University. The senior tallied six tackles with one sack, 2.5 tackles for loss and a fumble recovery.
Head Coach Chris Wilkerson: "Michael has played the best football of his career through the first five weeks of this fall. His ability to cause chaos at the line of scrimmage for our opponents has been outstanding. His continued effort and grit to find ball carriers has been outstanding. His efforts up front helped lead the defense to a second-straight shutout on Saturday. Right now, he leads our team in tackles for loss and sacks. He has battled through some nagging injuries and has played with pain during the first half of the season, but has done an amazing job. He has continued to improve every year and is playing at a high level right now. I know he will do anything to help our team and will continue to battle no matter what the situation. Michael brings outstanding energy, enthusiasm and toughness. I look forward to watching him lead our team the remainder of this fall as we continue Midwest Conference play."
Teammate Ben Christensen: "Mike is an extremely important staple of our team. What I look up to most about Mike is his work ethic off the field. He always works to keep his body in top shape, both with his diet and his work in the weight room. At practice, Mike is always the guy to show up early and bring positive energy every day. You’ll never see him complain, just smile and do what he’s asked to do. During games he is cool, calm and collected. He’s never rattled, we could be losing, we might not be getting some calls, but you know Mike will always be there thinking about the next play. Mike is the model leader any team desires as he continues to set the tone for us every day."
