Men's Cross Country / Sophomore / Cincinnati, Ohio
Chase Gardner is a sophomore runner on the UChicago men's cross country team. At the NCAA Midwest Regional last weekend, Gardner was an All-Region selection after placing 33rd in a time of 25:33.7. The Maroons were subsequently selected to participate in the upcoming NCAA Division III national meet.
Head Coach Chris Hall: "Chase had an outstanding performance at the regional meet and was named to the All-Region team for the first time. He's had a great sophomore season and after running himself to exhaustion at the UAA Championships (he collapsed 100 meters before the finish line but still struggled back to his feet and across the line) was anxious to see how he would rebound. He came back with his best-ever cross country meet and was a key performer in our team advancing on to the NCAAs this upcoming weekend. Chase runs really intelligent, patient races. Running in about 60th place at the two-mile mark, he just kept moving up throughout the race to get into an All-Region position."
Other OOC nominees
Marco Cobian (Football)
- Head Coach Chris Wilkerson: "Marco has had to deal with a ton of adversity this fall. He was injured in the season opener and was bypassed for the starting quarterback position. However, he continued to compete, improve and prepare every week. He helped lead us to a 48-16 victory against Lake Forest. The last two Saturdays as a starter, he completed 43 of 61 passes for 516 yards and seven touchdowns. He also added 71 yards rushing and another touchdown. Marco is a fierce competitor. I look forward to watching him compete during the off-season."
